Brenda Ann Stewart, born on August 23, 1950, in South Bend, Indiana, to Norma Lee and Benjamin Stoner. Brenda lived a life full of love, authenticity, and warmth with a vibrant and caring presence to all who knew her. She passed away leaving behind a legacy of love, dedication, and countless cherished memories.
Brenda's life was enriched by deep connections and loving partnerships. She was married to her first husband Freeman Smith and later married Rodney Stewart who preceded her in death, and most recently, her "guy" Merion Edgerson, whose recent passing was a profound loss. Brenda leaves behind three children all of which she loved dearly.
An avid bowler and a lover of the outdoors, Brenda found joy in visiting Woodhaven Lakes, there she brought people together by coordinating cookouts and fishing. She was fond of swimming, dedicating many years to the YWCA where she not only worked but encouraged others to better themselves. Brenda was also a dedicated property manager for many years at the Illinois Institute of Technology, where she was valued for her hard work and commitment. She completed a bachelor's degree in English from Chicago State University. Her talents extended into the kitchen, where her zucchini bread and homemade cookies became legendary among family and friends. Baking for loved ones was one of her favorite ways to express her care.
Brenda is survived by her sisters: Rosie Hairston, Ruthie Stoner, and Michelle Seaton HoleyBeld; her beloved children: Freeman "Bernie" Smith, III, Dayatra Smith, and Breanne Thomas; Grandchildren: Lauren Hatcher, D'Ettienne Smith, DeShaun Smith, Jessica (Eshar) Harvey-Burks, Jasmine (Michael) Harvey-Caroll, Freeman Smith, IV, and Michael Chavis Wilson, and her grand-dogs: Rasta, Princess, Jake from State Farm, and Honey.
Her family and friends will honor her memory with gratitude for the love, laughter, and joy she cultivated.
