Cleo D. Smith was the second born to the marital union of Mable Yolanda Weems and Clinton Marks, September 22, F)24 in Alexandria, Louisiana. Cleo along with her older sister, Dorothy was brought to live in Chicago, Illinois as a young child.
Cleo was raised in Woodlawn and Englewood communities on Chicago's southside; where she attended McCosh Elementary School. In F)39, Cleo along with her family moved to the Morgan Park community, where she attended Morgan Park High School. After moving to the Morgan Park community, Cleo met the love of her life, David Smith. On December 3, 1941 Cleo and David were united in marriage. This union lasted for the next 76 years. From this union, three daughters were born, Gloria, Johnetta, and Yolanda.
In 1953, Cleo and her husband David purchased a home in Markham, Illinois where they resided until progress uprooted them in 2017- Cleo, then resided in Park Forest, Illinois until her passing.
Cleo was a Christian woman, who was introduced to Christ at an early age. In her youth, she attended Woodlawn A.M.E. Church. After moving to the Morgan Park community, she joined Arnett Chapel A.M.E. Church. While at Arnett Chapel, she became an active member of the Arnett Christian Ladies, later known as the United Christian Ladies. In 1982, she and her husband David joined Daniel Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church in Phoenix, Illinois, under the leadership of Rev. Henry E. Miller.
Cleo belonged to a travel club and enjoyed traveling by bus around the country.
Cleo was born to be a wife, mother and homemaker. She was always a lady, had a quiet demeanor, and kept an immaculate home. She was a good cook, meals were always prepared and ready; jellies, jams, preserves, and wine from the grapes and apples that grew in her yard. She always had a vegetable garden growing, and she knew how to can, and preserve food, paint, hang wallpaper, etc. She loved her family and enjoyed engaging in lively conversations with her daughters. She was dearly loved by her family and has left an indelible mark on our lives. We will forever miss her.
Cleo was preceded in death by her father, Clinton; mother, Mable; husband, David; and her sisters: Wyetta and Dorothy.
Cleo leaves to mourn her passing: three daughters, Gloria West, Johnetta Moore Smith, and Yolanda Smith; grandsons: Jason D. West, Erik D. Moore, and Andrew C. Moore (Sonja); niece, Evaland Taylor; brother-in-law, Gerald Smith; and the host of great-grandchildren, family members, and friends.
