Deacon Eddie Garth, Sr., was born on June 10, 1935 in Memphis, Tennessee, to the parents of Robert and Cynthia Garth. He was preceded in death by his parents, his hrst wife, Doris, son, Eddie Garth Jr., sister Beulah Wade, and granddaughter, Crystal Murphy.
Eddie graduated from Dunbar High School in Chicago, Illinois. He was a long-time employee of lnland Steel where he served as a switchman for 30 years before he retired. Eddie was a faithful member of Christ Temple Baptist Church in Markham, Illinois, where he served as a deacon for more than 20 years. He was also a member of the Male Chorus, and a faithful prayer warrior in the Prayer Ministry.
Later in life, Eddie married his second wife, Shirley, with whom he happily spent the remainder of his life. He was an avid bowler and was a member of several bowling leagues. He also enjoyed traveling with his daughter and family and had a passion for photography-capturing memories across the western U.S. and abroad in Italy, Greece, Alaska, Spain, Turkey and Egypt.
On December 6, 2023, Eddie le& this earthly world peacefully with his faithful, caring, and devoted wife by his side. He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife, Shirley; loving daughter, Jennifer (Dr. Mark) Murphy; grandsons, Mark Murphy, Atty. Daniel Murphy, and Joshua Garth; and great grandson, Trey Murphy III. Stepdaughters, Valerie (Ronald) White, Angela (John) Edger, Rowena Banks and Judy (Melvin) Mitchell; other grandsons, Matthew Mitchell, Ethan Mitchell, and Courtney Greer; other granddaughters, Candace (Nate) Reed and Ashley McKinney; sister-in-law, Yvonne Clay-Smith; special nieces, Cynthia Conway and Phyllis Hampton, and other relatives and friends.
Eddie was a loving husband, father, stepfather, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle and friend. He will truly be missed. May God rest his soul.
