Eleanor McCammon Obituary
The life of Eleanor Lorraine Cook McCammon began in Oakland, California on April 15, 1948. She was the second of five children born to Julia and Pastor Walter Cook. Her parents always said that she was exceptionally smart from the very beginning. Eleanor accepted Jesus as her Lord and Savior at the young age of four years old.
Eleanor lived with her family and attended school in Oakland until they moved to the Chicago area when she was ten years old. As a member of Great Hope Missionary Baptist Church, she attended Sunday School and Baptist Training Union. She also sang in the youth choir. As years went by, she served as President of the senior choir, Chairwoman of Christian Education, and on the vacation bible school and finance committees.
Eleanor met and married Richard McCammon. Three daughters were born to this union; Kelley, Robin, and Kisha. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. Her grandchildren affectionately call her "Gran".
Eleanor earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Education from Chicago State University, and a Master of Science in Education from Government State University. She taught mathematics in District 218 for over 30 years until she retired in 2003. She was an active member of B.U.I.L.D, a scholarship program at Dwight D. Eisenhower High School. She believed in being proactive in supporting worthy causes. She was an avid contributor to numerous ministries, charities, and foundations to include Moody Bible Institute and The American Cancer Society, etc.
In retirement, she and her husband loved to travel the world with family and friends. They visited many countries across Africa, Asia, and Europe. After the death of her husband, Richard, she crossed an item off her bucket list by becoming a college student once again. She attended Charis Bible College in Woodland Park, Colorado, where she became a member of a Christian community that warmly embraced her. She immediately considered them family.
Eleanor was preceded in death by her husband, Richard McCammon; her parents, Walter and Julia Cook; and her sister, Helen Dailey (Clarence). She leaves to cherish her memory her daughters: Kelley Vaughn, Robin McCammon, and Kisha Knazze-Carbins; one son in law, Roderick Carbins III; her sister & brothers: Marilyn Cook, Walter Cook and James Cook (Edna); three brothers-in-law: Clarence Dailey Sr., Patrick McCammon (Terry), and David McCammon; one sister-in-law, Kathy McCammon; eight grandchildren: Brittany Johnson, Taylor Johnson, Cody Knazze, Bryce Vaughn, Kayla Vaughn, Roderick Carbins, IV, Zachary Carbins, and Xari Carbins; three great grandchildren: Melody Johnson, Laila Johnson, and Liam Johnson; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
