Elvin was born to Josephine Buchanan and Elmo Purdiman on April 14, 1382, in Harvey, Illinois. Elvin was the third oldest of eight children born to this union.
Elvin grew up in Harvey, Illinois, where his early education began at Whittier Elementary School and continued through Gwendolyn Brooks Jr. High School. Later, he took the important step of earning his G.E.D. and attended IvyTech Community College. Throughout his life, he has taken on various labor jobs, demonstrating his strong work ethic. Elvin has always had a passion for fixing things and enjoys working with his hands.
Elvin moved to East Chicago, Indiana, in 2012, where he married Jeovonia
T. Buchanan. Together, they embraced the beautiful journey of parenthood, cherishing the unique joys and challenges that come with welcoming two precious sons into their family.
Elvin was aloving and generous person who fuund joyin life'ssimple pleasures.He fuund happiness in the little things, whether it was cooking, playfully pretending he had superpowers for his sons, fixing things inside and outside of the house, playing basketball, or cracking jokes with his siblings. Elvin's deep affection fur his parents was evident in the way he made it apriority to call them daily,constantly checking in to show he cared
Elvin enjoyed spending time at the casino, playing pool, and singing karaoke with his friends. One thing d1is family has that is contagious is if one person bursts into a dance move, you had better believe Elvin is going to get up from wherever he's at and start stepping to d1e beat of d1e music. His signature moves were stepping to the left, stepping to the right, and some slides in between. It was d1ese simple, joyful moments that brought everyone closer together, creating memories due would last a lifetime.
Elvin truly saw himself as a "Soul Survivor." He faced life's trials and tribulations wid1 incredible resilience, holding love, loyalty, and kindness close to his heart for himself and for everyone he encountered. His often-repeated phrase, "Ain't nothing to it, but to do it, "reflected his belief in the power of hard work and dedication to achieve one's dreams. As we remember him, we will deeply feel the absence of his radiant smile, his joyful laughter, and the wise, encouraging words that provided comfort and inspiration. We will dearly miss his smile, his laughter, and his wise, uplifting words.
On Thursday, October 2, 2025, Elvin Lamarr Buchanan made his transition. He is preceded in death by his brother, Andrae Jovan Buchanan.
Elvin is survived by his wife Jeovonia T. Buchanan and two sons: Elvin Lan1arr Buchanan, Jr., and Eli Andre Buchanan. His loving parents: Josephine Buchanan and Elmo Purdiman. Four brothers: Coryor Buchanan, Elmo Buchanan, Germichael Buchanan (Tina), Cl11istian Buchanan-Purdian1an (Marissa). Two sisters: April Buchanan Buder (Damien) and Mary Puridan1an. Six (6) nieces and three (3) nephews, and a host of family and friends.
