Erma Jean Bruce's Obituary
Erma Bruce Obituary
Erma Jean Bruce, was born on May 28, 1939, in Decatur, Alabama to Allie Bee Adair and Frank Fuqua. She was the fourth child out of seven children. Her siblings, Ralph, Johnnie, Luttie, and Ionia all preceded her death.
Erma received Christ at an early age and received her early education in Decatur, AL. before moving to Chicago, IL. in 1955. She graduated from Morgan Park High School in Chicago, Illinois.
Erma met Ralph Bruce and the two were married on May 9, 1961. To union three daughters were born: Erma 'Da-Da', Andrea and Tamika. Following her husband Ralph's passing in 1988, Erma raised her daughters with grace, knowledge and wisdom.
Erma worked for various establishments throughout her life, such as Spiegel's, Monarch Cleaners, and the United States Post Office. However, her primary occupation was being a devoted mother, and a caregiver. She was a source of nourishment for many, both through her meals and her caring nature. Family held a special place in Erma's heart, and she was affectionately referred to as "Sis" by her loved ones; and if someone would bother them she was known for her quick and curt reactions.
Erma was an active member of Mount Calvary MBC, where she served as Secretary of Sunday School Class #14. She was dedicated and faithful in her service, often participating in food giveaways, and community activities.
Erma took pride and her appearance. She had a passion for fashion, and when she attended any event she was dressed to the "T". She was definitely a class act. Additionally, she maintained a clean household and even undertook DIY projects like refinishing her hardwood floors, making them look like new. During her free time, she could be found enjoying the music of her favorite artists: Bobby Blue Bland, and BB. King.
Erma loved playing cards and every now and then, she could be spotted at the casmos. She loved cooking and the family loved to eat whatever she cooked. Her specialty dishes were fried chicken, greens, cabbage dressing, tuna, macaroni and cheese, chili and don't forget about those fish fry parties! One of her traditions were hosting Sunday family dinners. She also had food prepared any given day of the week to share with whomever stopped by. Erma was known for her approachable nature and motherly love. Her motherly love was shown not just to her daughters, but to anyone in need of it. Erma was easy to talk to, and just about everyone trusted her with their secrets.
Erma enjoyed traveling, with Las Vegas being among her preferred destinations. Additionally, she cherished visiting her family in her hometown of Decatur, Alabama. Over the years some of her past hobbies were playing tennis. She also enjoyed gardening, and with that 'green thumb', she could grow just about anything.
Erma was extremely proud of her grandchildrens achievements. She was able to see them grow into young adults, complete their education, and was able to see them walk across the stage to receive their Master's Degree. She was very happy to participate in their celebrations after each milestone.
Erma was a resilient individual who faced challenges head-on, and always managed to overcome them. She remained dedicated to her faith and service to Mount Calvary Church until her health prevented her from attending in person. Despite receiving a difficult diagnosis, she never wavered in her belief and trust in God, always emerging stronger. She found solace in worship and listened to her Pastor's daily devotions. She found pleasure in listening to Shirley Caesars, and the sounds of her favorite group, "The Jackson Southerners", filled her home.
Erma was surrounded by her family as she peacefully transitioned. God brought closure to Erma Bruce's story. She was a devoted follower of Jesus, a hard worker, a loving wife and mother, and a caring individual who fulfilled her promise to her late sister Johnnie by looking after her nephew, George Fuqua.
Erma's legacy of love and sacrifice lives on through her three daughters: Erma Elexic 'Da-Da' Bruce, Andrea Johnson (Allen), and Tamika Denise Bruce.
Erma is survived by her two grandchildren: William Donnell "Bill" Love, and Dyamond Andrea Bruce as well as her brother, Richard L. Adair (Nina); her sister, Brenda Sanders; two brothers-in-law: Michael Griffin and Reginald Griffin (Vaudelita); and sister-in-law, Juanita Foster (Anthony); a special friend, Beatrice Davis; and the host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends with whom she loves, and touched with her strength and love.
