Eugene Edward Johnson, also known as "Gene" was born on October 15, 2000 to the union of Eugene and Stephanie Johnson Jr. He was the oldest of four children. Gene accepted Christ at the age of 9 and was a member of Mt. Moriah M.B. Church of Harvey, IL. until the time of his passing.
Gene graduated from O.W. Huth Middle School in 2015. He attended Southland High School and graduated from Gavit High School in 2019. Gene was a third-generation football player, and earned "All Conference" for football in 2019. Upon graduation, Gene was recruited by Judson College as a member of their inaugural football program.
Gene was devoted on and off the field. As a member of Mt. Moriah, Gene served on the Usher Board. As he matured, he became a member of The Mighty Men of Mt. Moriah Men's choir. As a member of this choir Gene sang lead. One of the song requests whether at Church or during visitations was him singing "Joy in the Morning." The Church was a mainstay for Gene. Even once he went away to school, he always came back to the Church. Although he was so young, he had many endeavors. One of those was being a digital creator. He worked the sound system for the
Church, created a movie trailer for his grandparent's Pastoral Anniversary and more recently, hosted a Twitch account.
Gene founded the P.J.S. Foundation and hosted the inaugural food drive in 2023- In 2024, under Gene's direction, the focus was on providing necessities to shelters. Gene cared about Church, family, community and children. In summer 2023, he began working at Camp Canadensis as General Bunk Counselor. Always, excelling, he became a "Super Senior Group Leader" in summer 2024
In a publicized statement, the camp said, "...Gene loved coaching Super Leagues at camp. From this point forward, we will honor the Super Leagues Coach's Award in his memory, now referring to it as the "Gene Johnson Coach's Award."
Gene was currently attending Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, Illinois, majoring in Health and Science. He was poised to graduate later this year. During his tenure there, he served as the President of The Association of Collegiate Men, was in the Student Government Association senate, and was a military and veteran service intern.
Gene is preceded in death by his maternal great-grandfather, Cornelius Parker Sr., and his paternal great-grandparents, Nathaniel and Mary Reynolds, and John and Thelma Johnson.
Gene departed this life on Saturday, February 8, 2025. He leaves to cherish his memories, his parents Eugene Jr., his mother, Stephanie Smith, his paternal grandparents Eugene and Carilyn Johnson Sr., his maternal grandparents Charles and Sandra Smith, his maternal great grandmother Mae Rose Parker, his brother, Carson Elliott Johnson, sisters Madison Elaine and Caitlin Katherine Mason, his aunt Queencandace Hunley (Harold Jr.), his uncles, Quentin Smith (Patricia), Justin Smith (Laura), Jeremiah Johnson Sr. (Carlotta), Dexter Johnson Jr. (Chama!), the Mt. Moriah M.B. Church Family, a plethora of cousins, friends, and family
