Greta Ellea (Langford) Hawkins, born September 11, 1940, in East St. Louis, Illinois to the late Susie (Powell) Langford and Howard F. Langford. She was the oldest of her three brothers, and one sister. Preceding her in death, her mother Susie (Powell) Langford, father Howard F. Langford and brother, Anthony Howard Langford who transitioned at 3 months old.
Greta attended the public schools of East St. Louis and graduated from Lincoln Sr. High School May 1958. She attended Texas Southern University and graduated June 1964, with a Bachelor of Arts, Elementary Education. She also attended Chicago State University graduated June 1979, with a Bachelor of Arts, Special Education, Certi?cation Type 10, Learning Disability, Behavior Disorder, Social Emotional Disorder and Cognitive Delayed. In furthering her Education, she attended Northwestern Illinois University and graduated June 1989, with a Master of Arts, Inner City Studies. She attended Governors State University graduated June 1999, with a Master of Arts, General Administration and Supervision Certi?cation Type 75.
She married the late Moses (Rudy) Hawkins on April 25, 1964. To their union one child was born. Greta was a member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc.
Being a Educator she started her life as a Program Director, Coordinating academic programs and supervised a sta? of 20 teachers at Englewood Learning Center from 1986-1990. In 1990-1993 she was promoted to Interim Executive Director at Englewood Health Service there she was responsible for the daily operation of (3) programs: Englewood Learning Center, Special Education School for Students With Behavior Problems, Julia Broy Memorial Home-Residential Program for Developmentally Disabled Boys and James Banks Memorial Home-Residential Program for Developmentally Disabled Girls. She supervised a staff of 70, she wrote proposals, planned yearly budgets and completed forms for the funding agencies.
In 1993 until retirement Greta worked at Shoesmith Elementary as Inclusion Special Education Teacher. There she was responsible for developing an individualized education program (IEP for children with disabilities. She was responsible for modifying and adapting lessons plans, Coordinated 1998 School Improvement Plan, Chairperson for school wide Career Development Program, Part of the school Intervention Remediation team, Light House Teacher and UNCF Coordinator.
She also worked for Washington High School and Grandma Jones Day Care 2007-2008. She was 78 years of age when she transitioned at 6:04 AM. Tuesday January 22, 2019 at St. Margaret Hospital in Hammond, Indiana.
Her survivors are her beautiful daughter Monika (Steve) Mosley of Riverdale, Ill, one grandson Malik Mosley of Riverdale, Ill, two brothers William Langford of St. Louis, Mo, Barry (Pam) Langford of Swansea, Ill, Andrea (Arthur) Ramsey of Swansea, Ill. Nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, cousins.
