Janice Harris was born in Hamilton, MS. on April 18, 1953, to the union of the late Jimmy and Corrine Harris. The family later moved to Robbins, IL. Janice attended Dwight D. Eisenhower in Blue Island, IL. Janice met Andrew Johnson, they fell in love, and they were married in 1971. To this love, their two children, Stacy Shaun and Alaki were born.
After high school, Janice continued her education at Nancy Taylor Speedwriting Secretarial School of Chicago. After completion, she began her extensive career in Corporate America. Janice served in Executive Administrative positions at Baird & Warner, USG Corporation, Morton Salt, ContiCommodity Services and Horne Federal Savings. After retiring from Corporate America, she started a new chapter of life when she met her traveling buddy, Tommy Dovenspike. Together they explored North America, Central America and Asia.
Janice was a devoted member of True Vine M.B. Church for nearly 40 years. Because of her commitment to service and ministry, she received a GLOW award in 2023- Janice was a private person and had no desire to be in the spotlight, but her light shone brightly. She really enjoyed learning about God's word and attended Sunday School diligently.
Her desire was to serve others, and she did that cheerfully and with excellence. Her family and friends were richly blessed through her giving of herself and her treasure. Janice was an excellent cook, and she enjoyed entertaining and hosting family and friends. She loved her gospel music, and she was also fond of the music of Peabo Bryson and Smoke City.
Janice was an avid sports fan and especially loved football. She and Stacy often enjoyed sports and cooking together before his passing. The highlight of her life these last few years has been the quality time she spent with Alaki and her two precious granddaughters, Mina and Zion.
Janice was preceded in her homegoing by her son, and the following siblings: George Washington Harris, Joe Lee Harris, Jimmie Lee Harris, Louise Gothard, Jean Harris, James Harris, Flossie Harris, Bennie Harris, Jessie Harris, and Shelia Harris.
Janice is survived by her siblings: Maggie Ramirez, Martha Jones, Vernoa Askew, and Montez Harris. She leaves the following to reflect her loving presence: her beloved daughter, Alaki; her beautiful granddaughters, Zion Johnson and Mina Hernandez, her godson, Jarrel Clark, her best friends, Margaret Clark and Sandra Echols, and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, and many friends.
