Leona Maten-Cooper's Obituary
Leona Maten-Cooper Obituary
My Name is Leona Maten-Cooper. I was given by God, to Eddie Sr. and Maggie Maten on August 20, 1956, in Chicago, IL. As the youngest of seven children, I was raised well; with lots of love, which is where I developed my first real sense of 'family' (and good food).
I attended Westcott Elementary and Calumet High School. Afterwords, I was employed by Zymogen Rush, as a Machine Operator. With that, I was able to purchase my first home on 89th and Parnell; where I resided with my first husband, TJ Cooper, until his transition in I')')0.
In I994, I was introduced to Saul Julius Bailey, by one of my brothers. Little did I know that my life would take on such a beautiful direction! In I997, God further blessed our love with Selena Renee; who made our lives complete. Anyone who knows me knows, that I always wanted a girl; and God truly delivered. We remained together until Saul's transition in 2013- Our house was always open to anyone who needed a meal; or a place to stay for a while. We kept an open-door policy, where all were welcomed, no matter what, no judgement.
I enjoyed cooking, police shows (48 Hours was my favorite), playing my duties (especially Curtis Mayfield, my daughter's favorite), and eating my weight in butter pecan ice cream whenever possible. I was the quintessential nurturing homemaker; and it was a blessing to help raise my nieces and nephews. It was a pleasure to be a 'play-mom' to anyone who needed me. I was also the 'life of the party'; and I loved to dance (although I really couldn't, according to my child). I was also known for telling it like it is even when it wasn't received well. In my mind, it came from a place of love, which extended beyond the bloodline.
As I step into eternity, my spirit will always be with my pride and joy, Selena. Tookie-Wookie, always remember that although you will miss me, remember what I taught you. Be independent, but never afraid to love. Know that Daddy and I loved you; and will continue to do so beyond this earthly life. We will always be with you, and will forever remain proud ...
I thank God for my sister, Gloria Hemphill, and my brother, Jewel Maten. You both were more like second parents to me. How lucky was I to have you in my life! To my nieces, nephews, and all of my bonus children, you already know what I expect from you. I have watched you grow into wonderful adults; and remember, you will always be my babies.
Waiting for me on the other side are my parents, my siblings: Eddie, Jr, Annie Mary, David, and Walter; and the love of my life, Saul.
Trust that I will never be alone. Memories never go away, and I think I left you all enough to see you through this lifetime.
