Mattie Thelma Means, was born November 26, 1936, in Randolph County, GA. to the late James and Mamie Jackson; she was seventh in line of her ten siblings.
Thelma, as she was affectionately known, was preceded in death by her one brother, Ulysses Jackson and seven sisters: Johnnie Mae Lowe, Minnie Hart, Hattie Williams, Margie Sheppard, Essie Jackson, Mamie Jackson, and Louise Godbold
Mattie Thelma accepted Christ at an early age joining St. Paul A.M.E Church in Georgia. After her parents relocated to Chicago, she joined Ward Chapel A.M.E. Church under the leadership of Reverend F.G. Jackson, accepting her position as a full-time member and usher.
Mattie graduated from Wendell Phillips High School. Mattie Thelma was joined in Holy Matrimony to Frank E. Means. To this union five children were born, her son James Junior, and two daughters, Tanya Means and Renetta Jad (Son preceded her in death). Also preceding her in death, four grandchildren: Tiffany, Antionette, James and Curtis.
In May of 1976, she was hired as a temporary Lunchroom Attendant for Thorp, J.N. School, it was then that she found her passion, motivating her to apply for permanent employment. Her certification opened the door for a managerial position, she went on to work for Robert A. Black Magnet School. Her position as an FSM/cook warmed not just the bellies of the students, but also the staff
