Vernon Henry's Obituary
Vernon Henry Obituary
Vernon Henry was born in Bakersfield, California on June 30, 1946. He was raised by his loving grandparents Early and Bessie Mae Henry. He was the oldest of four siblings. Proud 'big brother' to Bernadette, Diana, and Roger, all preceding him in death.
Vernon attended Jackson State University, majoring in music. During his tenure at Jackson State he participated in the marching band, the infamous "Sonic Boom of the South".
Vernon was extremely gifted and talented, playing numerous instruments and had a beautiful singing voice. While at Jackson State, he met and fell in love with Bessie Sutton, who he affectionately called, "Demp". The two were united in marriage on August 16, 1969. From this union three children were born: Kim, Joyce, and Vern.
Vernon accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior at an early age. He served the church in numerous capacities throughout the years: Deacon, minister, choir member, Sunday school and new membership teacher, mentor to youth through music, and he was faithful in visiting the sick and shut in. Vernon also diligently and faithfully took care of the Grace Baptist Church landscaping.
Vernon was an educator working within the Chicago Public School system for numerous years; he served as a high school music teacher, and band director, leaving a lasting impression on his colleagues and students.
Vernon loved people; he never met a stranger. Vernon would talk to everyone, sharing stories and laughs. He also loved sweets and became known as "the candy man". He also had a passion for cars and vehicles of all sorts. Vernon had a knack for landscaping; it started as a hobby and segued into entrepreneurship.
Vernon was a hard worker. He instilled the value of hard work and the love of the Lord into his children and grandchildren. Vernon's love of music was evident. He could often be heard humming a tune or simulating the play of an instrument. Vernon imparted his love of music to his children and grandchildren, exposing them to musical instruments early on.
Vernon loved his family deeply. He was extremely proud to be a grandfather and was affectionately called "Grandy". He prioritized family, whether blood-related or not. He absolutely loved his extended family, making them all a high priority. During his retirement years, one of his favorite outings was "Friday Breakfast" with his cherished friends; in particular his loyal and faithful friends of more than forty years, Cleotha Lewis, and Narvel Kimble.
Vernon leaves to cherish his wonderful legacy of love and life to: wife, Bessie; two daughters: Kimberly Wesley (Chris), Joycelyn Henry; son, Vern Henry; son-in-love, John "Chris" Wesley; grandchildren: Kyle, Dylan, Reagan, Tyler, Ryan, and Leah; a host of loving nephews, nieces, cousins, relatives, and friends.
