We gather here today to celebrate the remarkable life of Wardell Johnson. Throughout his life,
Wardell embodied the virtues of faith, courage, love, and devotion. As a pastor, military member,
husband, father, and grandfather, he left an indelible mark on the hearts of all who had the
privilege of knowing him.
Wardell Johnson was born on September 22, 1926, in Magnolia Arkansas to Mary Lena and Frank
Johnson. He was the eldest of six siblings Herbert, Oreba, William (W.C), Marion (JR) and Evertine.
Wardell Johnson met his first love Mae Ruth Green, where they later wed March 22, 1945. Wardell
left Arkansas to Michigan to join the Army. He was a dedicated military member of the armed forces
where he served his country with honor and distinction in World War II. His selflessness and
sacrifice in defense of his country will forever be remembered and honored. His exemplary
leadership and unwavering commitment to duty set an inspiring example for those who served
alongside him.
After serving his country, Wardell became a certified Electrician and Carpenter. From there Wardell
and Mae Ruth relocated to Chicago for greener pastures where they had three children Ardell
Johnson, Victor Johnson, and Kathy Johnson. He was a devoted employee at Midland & Ross National
Castings in Cicero IL, where he worked until his retirement in 1985. Wardell became an ordained
minister on December n, 1966 at Christian Fellowship M.B. in Chicago IL. He opened his church
Second Samaritan Church of God on July 21,1977. Wardell served there with Mae Ruth until her
passing in 1981.
He later found love and companionship again with his second wife, Barbara Johnson, whom he married
on March 29, 1985. Wardell served as a cherished father figure and a source of inspiration for
Barbara's children Rolmene (Rockie) Ward, Darcel) Strickland, Otis Strickland, and Murrell
Strickland. Alongside Barbara, he dedicated numerous years to community outreach through their
welcoming ministry at the Second Samaritan Church of God in Chicago, until they retired the church
in 1998. Following their extensive service, he assumed the role of Assistant Pastor at First Church
of God in Harvey, IL. He remained devoted to Barbara Johnson who he loved dearly and spent the
remainder of his life until God called him home December 2, 2023.
His unwavering belief in God and Christ permeated every aspect of his being, shaping his
actions and guiding his path. He found solace and strength in his faith, and he dedicated himself
to sharing its teachings with his family and community. His steadfast belief in the promise of a
new heaven and new earth served as a source of comfort and inspiration, offering hope and
reassurance to all who crossed his path. Wardell was a devoted author who shared his spiritual
insights with the world. His book, "Do You Now Believe," stands as a testament to his commitment to
spreading the message of faith, love, and redemption. Through his writing, he sought to ignite the
flames of faith in the hearts of his readers, leaving behind a legacy chat will continue to touch
and transform lives for years to come.
As a husband, father, and grandfather, Wardell's love knew no bounds. His unwavering support,
kindness, and guidance formed the foundation upon which his family thrived. His devotion to his
loved ones reflected the boundless love and compassion he found through his faith, and his presence
will forever be cherished in the memories and hearts of those he held dear.
Today, we bid farewell to Wardell Johnson-a man of faith, integrity, and love. Though he has
departed from this world, his spirit will continue to live on in the hearts of all who were
fortunate enough to know him. He joins in spirit his mother and father and 4 siblings. He leaves to
cherish his memory his wife, 5 children, 1 sister, numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, and
great- great grandchildren. A host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and family. Let us carry
forward the lessons he imparted and the love he shared, keeping his memory alive through our own
acts of kindness, compassion, and devotion.
